Kurt R. Mattson is the President of Union Legal Research. He is the former Director of Library Services and Continuing Education at Lionel Sawyer & Collins in Las Vegas. Earlier in his career, he was an editor of BNA’s Federal Rules Service, and Federal Local Court Rules Service, and Thomson Reuters’s Uniform Commercial Code Reporting Service.
Kurt served in numerous research, product development, and management positions with several publishers. He spent a substantial portion of his career working for West Publishing (Thomson Reuters). He has also served as a consultant for several legal research and marketing companies.
With more than 30 years of legal writing experience nationally, Mattson provides timely legal research and writing for law firms. This includes motions, pleadings, and briefs.
Kurt received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law and his Masters of Law (LL.M.) from George Washington University. He has also earned a Masters of Library Information Science (MLIS) from Wayne State University.
Kurt is the editor of the Lexis title, BSA/AML Update, and author of Fair Debt Collection Practices: Federal and State Law and Regulation. He is also a contributing author of Brady on Bank Checks and Fund Transfers, as well as Federal Fair Lending and Credit Practices.
His first article on employment discrimination, The Demise of Disparate Impact on the Rehnquist Court, was published in the University of North Dakota Law Review. He co-authored with Cornell Law School Professor Peter A. Hook, Surprising Differences: An Empirical Analysis of Lexis and West Headnotes in the Written Opinions of the 2009 Supreme Court Term, in the Law Library Journal in 2018.
He is a contributor to other business and legal publications, such as AALL Spectrum, Vegas Legal Magazine, and the Nevada Lawyer.
Kurt lectured on legal research for the National Business Institute in 2013 in a class entitled, Find it Free and Fast on the Net: Strategies for Legal Research on the Web and taught several semesters of legal research at the University of California, Riverside. He also has served on the American Association of Law Librarians Committee on Relations with Information Vendors and the Education Committee of the Nevada CLE Board.
